About the Rose-ringed parakeet

The Rose-ringed parakeet is a bird in the family Psittaculidae (order Psittaciformes). Its conservation status on the IUCN Red List is “least concern”. Adults have a wingspan of about 45 cm.

What does the Rose-ringed parakeet sound like?

Birds produce sound with the syrinx, a vocal organ deep in the chest that can make two independent sounds at once. Songs tend to be long and patterned and are used to hold territory and attract a mate; calls are short signals for contact, alarm and flight.

The recordings here are labelled as call and flight call. Listen for differences in rhythm, pitch and repetition – the spectrum display makes it easy to see whether a sound is a pure whistle (a thin line), a harsh call (a broad band) or a trill (rapid repeated marks).

From Wikipedia

The rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), also known as the ring-necked parakeet, or colloquially as the Indian Ringneck, is a medium-sized parrot in the genus Psittacula, of the family Psittaculidae. It has a disjunct native range in tropical northern Africa and the Indian subcontinent, and is now introduced into many other parts of the world where populations have established themselves having been bred for the exotic pet trade and then escaped.

The species is listed as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) because its population appears to be increasing, but its popularity as a pet and unpopularity with farmers have reduced its numbers in some parts of its native range.
