Recordist's notes

I was transferring a rather large amount of data - ironically, my own field recording archive - between two external hard drives when the hums and clicks of the drives distracted me from staring at the progress bar. I noticed that the two drives were making markedly different sounds, so I reached out for my contact mics, some masking tape and my recorder and started recording different takes of both. Initially, I thought that the recordings would make a nice sample for further processing, e.g., a granular synth in a live context, but, really, after listening to all the takes, I decided that they didn't really need any post-processing. So this is simply a layering of different takes from different places on the hard disk hulls, with no more manipulation than a few fades. Details: Contact mics* -> Olympus LS-11 @ 24/96. * The contact mics I use are the fabulous ones made by Jez Riley French
