Recordist's notes

Recorded at a beaver lodge. Beavers here had the friendly idea to build their lodge next to the public boardwalk creating great viewing and listening opprtunities. Did not now until now that beavers have any vocalisation. Recording starts with the sounds of courting Common Mergansers (Mergus merganser) and Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) Male Mergansers with their strange hollow piping sounds and females uttering their staccato laughter like sounds. Mallards and Mergansers heard throughout the recording. Most of the splashing sounds are from the Mergansers (part of the courtship behaviour) Most of the sounds of flying birds are from the Mergansers as well. At 1:35 in the recording the louder and more liquid sound of an adult beaver diving nearby. At 1:50 some gnawing sounds from inside the lodge start. At 3:00, after another beavers splash Greylag Geese (Anser Anser) are calling. At 4:10 the first round of sounds from inside the beavers lodge can be heard. I think these are sounds from juveniles. At 5:10 Water Pipits (Anthus spinoletta) call as they are flying over, dispersing from their roost. At 5:30 a Bearded Reedling (Panurus biarmicus) call while flying over. At 6:05 a Great Egret (Ardea alba) can be heard, at 9:15 an adult beaver starts to move noisily through the reeds to the right and at 9:50 a Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) calls. At 11:20 Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) at 11:30 again Greylag Geese. at 11:45 the "chack chack chack" sound of Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris) can be heard as they fly over and at 18:55 the Grelag Geese get upset and finally fly off. Sorry for the aeroplanes and the one or other car in the distance. Temperatures just below 0°C. The boardwalk being frozen over and rather slippery... Binaural recording, recorded with a modified Crown SASS housing incorporating two sennheiser mkh20 mics and a Sound Devices 702 recorder. The dummy head microphone facing north west. Placed on a tripod about 1,60 m high. For the threedimensional effect of the recording headphones are recommended. pictures of the place: https://observation.org/observation/385520514/
