Dentsivka

The dentsivka is a member of the flutes (Hornbostel–Sachs 421.221-12). Learn how it makes its sound and explore related instruments.

How the dentsivka makes its sound

In the Hornbostel–Sachs system, which classifies instruments by how they produce sound, the dentsivka belongs to the flutes (edge-blown): an air jet is split on a sharp edge, setting the air column vibrating – flutes, recorders, whistles and panpipes.

More broadly it is one of the aerophones (wind instruments), where sound comes from vibrating air.

Players shape its sound through technique and materials; the resonating body filters the raw vibration, boosting some harmonics and damping others.

From Wikipedia

The dentsivka (Ukrainian: Денцівка) is a woodwind musical instrument with a fipple (mouthpiece). In traditional instruments, the tuning varies with the length of the tube. It is made in a variety of different sizes: the piccolo (tuned in F), prima (in C), alto (in G), tenor (in F), and bass (in C).

Two varieties of the instrument are the dvodentsivka and the pivtoradentsivka.
