Recordist's notes

Walking over the spectacularly creaky floor of the disused library/sports hall in ZeM (Brandenburgisches Zentrum für Medienwissenschaften - Brandenburg Media College). This impressive building is a legacy from the DDR, now used as a college but scheduled for demolition in the future. This recording was made walking over the wooden floor in the near dark trying to avoid empty shelves and somewhat precarious piles of discarded items stacked there. The idea of the 'nightingale floor' comes from Japan, where such a creaky floor was used to forewarn of approaching people and guard against attacks by stealthy assassins.
