Recordist's notes
Recorded at Deep Lock Quarry, specifically Lock 28, the deepest lock in the Ohio Erie Canal. This part of the canal now rarely fills, but some water does flow in, which you will hear throughout the recording. There is also a historic quarry on the site. Millstones from the historic Shumacher Mill, the predecessor of Quaker Oats, can be found onsite, along with other interesting quarry castoffs and remnants of the quarry itself. Reputed to be haunted, this place is heavily forested and has always struck me as melancholy. It is an important nesting site for songbirds, including the vulnerable cerulean warbler. The Lock is located in Cuyahoga National Park and can be accessed via the Deep Lock Quarry parking lot or via the Ohio Erie Canal Towpath Trail. You can hear the sound of bikers and walkers on the trail.
