Recordist's notes
A field recording from the center of Nancy Holt's sculpture 'Rock Rings' situated on the south end of the campus of Western Washington University. (Unfortunately, due to shadowing on G-Maps' satellite view the sculpture is not visible) The sculpture is composed of two concentric walls made of rock and mortar, roofless with round 'windows' to the outside. The simplicity and lack of symbols or overt meaning cause 'Rock Rings' to suggest a ruined dwelling or temple. Like many other works of earth art, when 'Rock Rings' was originally creates it was situated in a relatively secluded area. As campus has grown, and the area has become more busy, anthropogenic noise has come to dominate the soundscape. Situated very close to 'Rock Rings' is another notable work of Land Art Robert Morris' 'Steamwork for Western Washington University'.
