Recordist's notes
St Mary's Basilika is impressive sonically as well as visually. The vast interior gives shape to an ancient reveberation born from unquestioned belief. The smallest sounds can sustain for seconds. Today a very young child, somewhat awed by the huge space, wanders around. The entrance door thuds regularly at the far end of the nave. Voices are hushed and footsteps muted. The stunningly detailed 13th century astronmic clock - recently reconstructed - strikes 5pm as carilons play faintly from outside.
