Recordist's notes

For these recordings, I asked people in the inner city of Johannesburg, Park Station and Alexandra Township to read sentences from Nelson Mandela’s biography ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ (the abridged edition!) but translated on the spot into their own mother-tongues... These are just a few clippings from the original recordings for what became the radio piece LONG WALK abridged. Joining international celebrations of Nelson Mandela Day and World Listening Day, 18 July 2014, I’m re-launching the piece on-line after it has been “underground” for a couple of years with a page on the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/LONG_WALK_abridged and these clippings of previously unreleased footage from the original recordings made on a borrowed mini-disc-recorder in Park Station Johannesburg… LONG WALK abridged first broadcast across the Radia-Network of independent stations in January and February 2007.
