Užupis is a small, bohemian neighbourhood in Vilnius, separated from the Old Town by the Vilnelė River. Known for its artists, street art, galleries and relaxed atmosphere, Užupis famously declared itself an independent “Republic of Užupis” on 1 April 1997. It has its own humorous constitution, flag, anthem and symbolic institutions.
