Recordist's notes

We are with the writer Virgina Phiri in the open meeting room adjacent to the library of the National Gallery. It’s a bit “echo-y” in here; but the amplified park preachers from Harare Gardens drove as inside. What you are listening to are the final 10 minutes of a long conversation around Virginia’s life as a woman writer in Zimbabwe. Virginia talks about the struggles that women have to go through and encourages her sistaz in the arts to stand strong in their creative production; “We have always done that!.... traditionally women were allowed to do it…!”. Find the complete interview with Virginia Phiri here: http://archive.org/details/Voices_from_Harare_782 Virginia Phiri is a writer, women’s rights activist and an expert of African orchids; known for her books concerning women’s lives, like “Highway Queen”; see: http://virginiaphiri.blogspot.de/ From: http://both-sides-of-the-zambezi.tumblr.com/
