Recordist's notes

Cecilia Mudimba is the chair lady of Bbindawuko Banakazi Coop. She is here recorded by Zubo’s project officer Caven Mugande. Recording took place on the rig at Simatelele harbour just before going out for fishing at night. Cecilia is from Mulowa village. She summarizes the story of BB as the first women fishing on Lake Kariba. Last night the wind was too strong for good catches. But she’s grateful for the women’s income; among the achievements for herself she counts a one-room house and being able to afford the school fees for her 3 children. As ladies on the lake, they are not afraid; it’s just that when the engine brakes down, that they need the help of their male employees. At the turn of the year, the had a bad experience with Zambian pirates, who stole their money and equipment and even threatened to kill them. Nonetheless, Cecilia finds strong words of encouragement for other women to get together in teams to earn their living and apply also for fishing rights on the Lake. archived at https://archive.org/details/bbindawuko_banakazi_fishing_coop_202011
