About this sound

A journey into, and out of the hangman’s noose as Alabamian Peyton Fahrquhar, a fervent secessionist, embarked upon a clandestine operation to quell Federal attempts to capture the Owl Creek Bridge. The soldiers charged with guarding the valuable river crossing held little tolerance for spies.

Why parks record sound

The NPS Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division monitors soundscapes in parks across the United States. Natural quiet is treated as a resource to protect, like clean air or dark skies: noise from aircraft, vehicles and machinery can mask animal communication and change the experience of a place.
