Audio File Size Calculator (WAV & MP3)

How much space will a recording take? Calculate WAV/PCM size from sample rate, bit depth and channels, and compressed size from bitrate.

How it works

Uncompressed size = sample rate × bit depth × channels × seconds ÷ 8 bytes. One hour of 48 kHz/24-bit stereo is about 1 GB; the same hour as a 320 kbps MP3 is 144 MB.

Field recordists often record 24-bit (or 32-bit float) for headroom and keep WAV masters, then share compressed copies.

Frequently asked questions

What sample rate should I use for field recording?

48 kHz is standard for video and plenty for most nature sound; 96 kHz or higher helps if you will slow recordings down or capture bat and insect ultrasound.
