Recordist's notes

The Dungeness Sound Mirrors were built in the 1920s to listen for enemy aircraft approaching across the English Channel. They were never so effective - the plane being in sight before it could be accurately located - and were quickly superseded by the invention of radar. Today they are inaccessible inside the Dungneness Nature Reserve, but in 2003 it was possible to walk up to them. This recording is the sound of stones being clicked by my friend Dana as she walks slowly along the 60meter length of this vast concrete listening wall. The clicks echo from its hard surface. Propeller planes from nearby Lydd airport and building work from nearby houses are the sonic backdrop.
