Recordist's notes

Visiting the abandoned exSoviet base of Vogelsang in 2020. My first trip outside Berlin during the Covid-19 pandemic. The train journey was better than expected. It was not so crowded and everyone wore a mask. Otherwise as normal. Sadly returning traffic in the city has brought back the pollution, so it was good to be in the forest and breath clean air again. Good weather too, pleasantly warm and a fresh breeze that constantly fluttered the leaves. Others were here too, flying drones that sound like overgrown mosquitos or just wandering. There seemed to be a greater variety of wildlife than usual. Maybe they hav been less disturbed during the corona lockdown. For the first time I saw wild boar, a large tusked male with a much smaller female. These are big animals, but they moved away quickly after seeing us. A black woodpecker - the largest of the family - was another first. It's drumming on a dead tree was the loudest sound in the forest. And many smaller birds too - willow warblers are a constant in this recording as are aspen leaves sizzling in the wind.
