Recordist's notes
This long recording is about the Gilles de Binche. It's a traditional carnaval played in some parts of Belgium. People wear very special costumes, Wikipedia describes : made with a linen suit with red, yellow, and black heraldic designs. It's trimmed with large white-lace cuffs and collars. The suit is stuffed with straw, giving the Gille a hunched back. These Gilles are playing music and dancing in the streets, throwing oranges on everybody, on cars, in the houses if windows are open. It's very noisy and festive. Some of the Gilles wear enormous, white, feathered hats. Above all, the Gilles de Binche are EXTREMELY DRUNK ! It's terrible and that's why the fanfare is quite inaudible ! But all this takes part of our heritage. At the end of the day, they can't play anything, they yell in the streets and they piss on the autobus !! These Gilles de Binche come from La Louvière and they are the Gilles de Bouvy troop.
