Recordist's notes
Fieldrecording of: September 2018 Lotte Geeven: The Oldest Light Lotte Geeven (1980) creates adventurous works about the human relationship to intangible, abstract matters such as airspace or the globe. Geeven continually travels the world in search of places where this relationship shifts, and on site she studies how people try to understand and control these complex phenomena. For a portrait, Geeven visited the deepest open hole on the planet drilled by humans and, together with a team of seismologists, engineers, and geophysicists, recorded the sound of the depths there. For Into Nature, Geeven installed a beacon of light in the fifteen-metre-high Cold War–era tower in Darp: the powerful light and sound represent the vibrations of pulsars (rapidly rotating neutron stars) as observed by LOFAR, a highly sensitive radio telescope located further on in Drenthe.
