Recordist's notes
'Octet', sound installation by Matt Rogalsky, situated beside the 4elements Living Arts office at 91 Main St, Kagawong ON from July 8-12, 2016. Visually, the piece presents as eight SM58 microphones hanging from branches of a tree, in this case a cedar. The microphones are used 'backwards', as tiny speakers. The sounds heard are from the collection of William WH Gunn, early Canadian environmental sound recordist (provided courtesy of the Macaulay Library, Cornell University), and are all birdsongs recorded in various Ontario locations in 1951-52, including on Manitoulin Island. Periodically Gunn can be heard introducing a recording, and the recording follows. All the birdsongs are played back slowed down to 20% of their original speed. Recorded with Zoom H2n placed under the tree.
Context
