Recordist's notes
Covehithe is a beautiful and very surreal spot on the Suffolk coast. The sea is eroding the soft sandy cliff at a speed that makes it look different on every visit. Crops disappear over the top frequently. One time the beach below was littered with onions. On this occasion barley has fallen over but is still growing fine in the landslides. Trees from an old wood lie on the sand and shingle bleached white by waves that scour through the roots and remaining branches. The sculptural forms are amazing. The sound of the waves can be heard through tide washed trunks by pressing your ear to the wood and be picked up by a contact mic. The contact mic was recorded in sync with normal mics listening to the waves. This track is a mix of the two layers with the mono tree sound in the middle and the sea in stereo either side.
