Recordist's notes
This place has hardly changed outwardly in 60 years. It's a haven for small yachts and serious sailing. There are still working repair yards and ships chandlers selling all thicknesses of rope, navigational aids, tin plates and crockery. One craftsman - here for years - continues to make furniture fron recycled wood (used to be driftwood). The nearby Harbour Inn still bears marks of the catastrophic east coast flooding in 1953. Today's tide is unusually high, if fact it is lapping half way up the tyres of cars parked by the river. But nobody seems bothered. It's a beautiful afternoon, relaxed and peaceful. The light wind clacks ropes on boat masts, walkers crunch on the gravel path and a family is trying to catch crabs with pieces of bacon on the end of string. They shout 'crabbing' at the end of the recording.
