Recordist's notes

This is a recording of Amy Black's Rough Fell sheep. These are just the yowes; the recording was made in Winter, when the tups (rams) are separated from the yowes, (ewes) to make sure that lambing doesn't go on late into the summer. These Rough Fell sheep are a prize-winning flock and so very friendly and used to having a lot of human handling. In the recording you can faintly hear Margaret Black talking to the sheep; she is Amy's mother. Margaret's mother before her (Clara Black) was also a shepherd. She is retired now, (as much as any Cumbrian farmer is ever "retired") but still a massive fan of the Rough Fell breed. We took hay up to these sheep on a quad bike, which is why they came up so close to us, and which is what you can hear them all munching.
