Recordist's notes

There is an awful lot going on with the waterfowl of the lake this spring; in this recording you can hear ducks quacking and a very territorial swan grunting and hissing (he is waiting for the eggs of himself and his mate to hatch). Keen little gangs of male ducks can also be heard, their quacks are a bit raspier than the female's... and the huffing, gaspy noise is an Egyptian goose who is guarding two goslings and his female mate. Canada geese can be heard honking in the background. There are aeroplanes above, it is very rare to get any recordings in Reading without them, and a little wind because it was quite a windy day... but I'm hopeful you'll enjoy this sonic glimpse of the lake and its residents, who are all very busy making or waiting for babies. There is also a pheasant that honks part way through the recording, and you can hear the tiny little cheep-cheeps of the goslings, and the snipping sound of their parents' chewing the grass by the lake. I placed the recorder right down amongst them and then backed right away so as not to frighten them or get charged by the very protective parents.
