Recordist's notes

This recording was made with a hydrophone and H2n recorder on the Lower Niagara River, from a canoe not far from the shore off Navy Hall. The river is over a half-kilometer wide at that point and the depth of the river in the recording area probably about twelve meters, the hydrophone being lowered at varying depths. Powered leisure and recreational fishing boats are heard, their swells and the tinkling of a steel canoe anchor dragging over the rock bottom that did not work well in the river’s strong current. The Niagara River’s health has much improved in recent decades over it’s heavily degraded condition and its many fish species are safe to eat to varying degrees.
