Recordist's notes

The Fauler See is a woodland area, partly park, partly nature reserve. At the centre is a rather pretty lake, which is fenced off to protect the wildlife. Large sign boards give an impressive list of the insects, birds, animals, trees and fungi found there. People come to jog or walk their dogs; there are a few cyclists. The wildlife areas are restricted and everyone sticks to the paths. The dominant sound is the unending bass roar of the city, which, here, can seem very loud. Trams rumble on the busy road not far away, sirens regualrly pass by and later in the day the nearby sports field is often full of shouts. This stream was set up beside the lake to participate in Reveil - the worldwide dawn chorus streaming event organised by Soundtent (https://soundtent.org/reveil.html), which takes place over the first weekend in May each year. The Berlin locations' Reveil broadcasts occurred around 6am on May 4th, but this particular stream was running for almost 2 days either side of that. The recordings here covers the whole period. This first track is from late afternoon when frogs were active in the lake, as were the people taking part in sports on the nearby football fields. Little grebes trill from the lake and a blackbird sings. The 'seesaw' call of the great tit is in the distance. A plane passes by overhead, while the low city roar is constant throughout. For me the combination here of human and natural sound is, for once, a rather positive mix. Both getting on with with life with interfering too much. It is a good example with what a city nature reserve can provide when allowed to do so.
