Recordist's notes

The sound of some rumbas can be heard coming from a house with an open window. "Rumba Vallekana" is a musical subgenre developed by the Romani community in the Vallekas neighborhood of Madrid, Spain, from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. It incorporates rhythms derived from flamenco rumba, particularly Catalan rumba, which lightens the softer flamenco styles, bringing them closer to pop. It also includes influences from rock and roll. Primarily represented by Los Chichos, Rumba Vallekana adapts the Catalan rumba style to a slower tempo. Above all, it incorporates the marginalized reality of drugs, prison, economic hardship, and unemployment in the neighborhood into many of its lyrics. The rumba is still very popular in the neighborhood.
