Recordist's notes

This is the sound of Sue Athur from the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers spinning yarn in the Shetland Textile Museum. She was working from some commercially prepared tops in a wide variety of natural Shetland sheep shades. This kind spinner who let me record her at the wheel, and another lady who works there - Barbara Cheyne - were both extremely helpful and friendly during my visit. We had an involved discussion about Fair Isle knitting and the use of colours in stranded knitwear. In the background, just beneath the sound of the spinning wheel, you can hear the sound of Barbara's knitting needles, clacking away gently in the background. She was making small gauntlets on metal needles while I recorded the sound of the wheel.
