Recordist's notes

The Crooked River canyon is part of the Smith Rock National Park that also includes high sheer rock faces famed for climbing. The scenery is spectacular, perfect for a blockbuster western movie. It is a very popular spot and on this lovely, sunny day many were here. About 40 kids on a school trip were playing a game, directed by teachers, on a flat patch of grass by the river, their shouts reverberating off the rock faces. Whilst recording another group of male military cadets thuded across the wooden bridge over the river, stopped nearby with a shout and after a short break picked up heavy timber sleepers and carried them back over the bridge. A brief sonic glimpse of highly organised, official American youth culture.
