Running underneath downtown Seattle is a commuter bus tunnel, allowing Metro to bypass downtown traffic. The 1.3 mile $455 million tunnel is finished entirely in expensive Italian marble, thanks to a cozy arrangement between the contractors and city managers. It presents a reverberant sound portrait of mass transit at work. Major elements: * Electric busses coming and going (some switching to diesel on the way out) * Commuters transferring on and off and between busses * Elevator (with bell) to street level * Loose manhole cover that everybody seems to step on
