Recordist's notes
Outside an abandoned factory, walking on the street, I heard a creaking sound. The sound was being produced in a place where a steel fence and a young tree have become tangled together. When the wind passes through, the tree and the fence rub against each other and the friction produces a particular sound. Close by, there is a railway track; a train enters the recording at some point and you can hear its horn. Also, the derelict factory which is near to the creaky tree is visited very regularly by folks who want to dump old stuff; you can hear their cars passing close by, and quite fast too. Finally, the abandoned factory is itself very creaky and sonorous, and so the sounds of it rattling in the wind are also present here. To make this recording, I strapped the EDIROL R-09 very close to the place where the creaking sound was happening, using cable ties. I then left it there for a while to document the sonic situation.
