Recordist's notes

When I travelled to the Scottish Borders to run a workshop in knitting speaker pillows, I wanted to find some local fleece for making the stuffing. The fleece I found was on a nice flock of Jacob sheep, less than 10 miles from where we were staying! It's a lovely bouncy fleece, and the flock owners were really supportive of my project and allowed me to record the sheep so that I can play the sounds of the flock through the stuffing made from their wool. I love to connect places and wool in this way, and to create reminders that wool comes ultimately from the land. In this recording, the shy sheep kept evading me, as I wandered amongst them with 2 sound professional binaural microphones mounted on a twig with some cable-ties. The mics were approx 25cm apart, so not exactly stereo spaced, but hopefully give some impression of the lovely acoustics of this field, flanked on all sides with trees, and filled with ewes and their still-young lambs. In the recording you can hear the sheep and also my bare feet as I walk between the sheep poo and the buttercups, listening to the sounds of the flock.
