Recordist's notes

Returning to my B&B after dark, I noticed many crickets in the hedges around. It sounded amazing, but all of a sudden people were driving on the driveway where I heard the crickets, and I was self conscious about trying to record them. I did not want to draw attention to myself, but as I rounded the corner of where I was staying, I realised that a single cricket was making its wondrous music behind the hedge. I positioned the recorder close to its place and sat back a little distance away to listen acoustically to the sound and to the distant surf of the sea. To dogs barking, someone squeaking home on their bicycle. The white noise of traffic on the road. The evening stillness. Then happiest of happy times, a small and industrious hedgehog came bowling down the path, all business and bustle. I really do love a hedgehog.
