Retracing Joe's footsteps around Portland

I traveled to Drill Hall Gallery specifically because this was a place where Joe Stevens created a rainy day recording; when I got there, Hannah Sofaer was running a Portland stone carving workshop. Portland stone is beautifully musical and particular. In this recording one of the workshop participants is carving out a pregnant lady shape inspired somewhat by the late artist Giacometti. Giacometti never depicted pregnancy so this aspect is a departure but in other elements it is similar to his ladies... the Portland stone is very hard and must be chipped away in tiny increments as you can hopefully hear in the recording. You can also hear the busy road right by the workshop space. The workshop is amazing - Drill Hall Project Space - a large structure adjacent to the impressive Drill Hall Gallery space, full of comrades chipping away at huge blocks of stone with selected chisels. I spoke mostly to Hannah in between recording the amazing sounds of the sonic stone.
