Recordist's notes
There are eight bells in the tower at St. Giles, dating back to 1793. The youngest bell was made in 1890. I adore knowing that this sound connects me to past listeners in Reading, who would have also heard the glorious sound of the bells ringing. For a long time I had thought bell ringing practice was on Thursdays, but now I know it's Wednesday, I can be sure to listen in more regularly. I love the density of microtones, semitones, harmonics and resonances in the sounds of the bells ringing, and the way they duet with the ebb and flow of traffic on Southampton Street. I was right under the tower making this recording, with my trusty EDIROL R-09.
