Recordist's notes

The ilala crafts workshop in Chinonge is taking place in the shade of some large trees where about 20 women weavers had gathered, sitting on the ground. We are hearing the wind in the large trees, the bells of life stock moving about and the knives of the weavers as they are shaping and “polishing” the hard ilala cross (= intima) that forms the starting point of weaving and the bottom of a basket. The recording in Chinonge was made by Donor Ncube, ilala crafts and financial assistance officer at Zubo Trust. Donor organised the workshop and documented it, wearing binaural, while herself also participating in it. The workshop is lead by a very experienced craft weaver from a neighbouring Binga ward, Notani Munkuli from Siachilaba.
