Recordist's notes
This is the sound of a Bluefaced Leicester sheep grazing in Johnby. Bluefaced Leicester sheep have a lovely soft fleece, and can be bred with Swaledales to produce the North England Mule (an important meat sheep in terms of the UK economy). Bluefaced Leicester sheep have lovely big noses and this one was gently ripping the grass with his mouth, having a graze, while I was walking past with my friend Caecilia. Most of the English countryside looks the way that it does because of centuries of grazing - just like this - this tiny sound (you have to listen hard for it amidst the biting Cumbrian winds) is literally the sound that has shaped rural England.
