Recordist's notes

Jacksons of Reading was a family-owned department store in Reading opened in 1875 by Edward Jackson. The store was kept in the family, and traded goods to the public until December 2013. After its closure, in January 2014, all of the old shop fittings and fixtures were offered up for sale by public auction. This is the sound of me entering the auction from King's Walk, going into the labyrinthine system of rooms; and fighting my way to the offices to pick up my bidding card. You can get some sense of the numbers of people who turned up for the auction, in the level of chatter! Recorded on sound professional binaural microphones, stealthily worn in the crowd to document this momentous, collective experience of huge change and loss in the locality. This was recorded at the start of the auction, and various recordings follow in a sequence, documenting some of the historic moments that occurred while I was there, hoping to secure lots 74 and 75 (which I did not do!)
