Recordist's notes

The Fauler See is a woodland area, partly park, partly nature reserve. At the centre is a rather pretty lake (frozen over today), which is fenced off to protect the wildlife. Large sign boards give an impressive list of the insects, birds, animals, trees and fungi found there. In early February it's pretty cold - around zero - although for the 2 days of this stream the sun shone and the sky was blue. Premature thoughts of spring came to mind. People come to jog or walk their dogs; there are a few cyclists. The wildlife areas are restricted and everyone sticks to the paths. The dominant sound is the unending bass roar of the city, which, here, seems very loud. Trams rumble on the busy road not far away, sirens regualrly pass by and later in the day the nearby sportsfield is full of shouts. This track was recorded at day break. The city roar is very clear and a goshawk is one of the first birds to call. Goshawks are not uncommon in Berlin but they are extremely elusive and rarely seen. However, at this time of year - the start of the breeding season - their loud calls can be heard surprisingly often.
