Recordist's notes

In this recording, Laurie and I are talking about wool carders, and she tells me a 'guddick', that is the Shetland word for 'riddle' about wool carders. The words are roughly "what tears at each other all day, and lies in each others arms at night" and the answer is wool carders. For those not in the know, wool carders are tools used to align wool fibres prior to spinning them into yarn. Wool carders are like two boards with handles on them, each covered on one side in tiny little bent spikes, (they used to be made from teasels). Wool is placed between the tiny spikes and they are moved against one another in a series of skillful moves which tidy up the fibres so that they are neatened up. If you don't card or comb wool before spinning it, you end up with a very lumpy untidy yarn, and the experience is horrible! When the carders are not being used, they are laid together with the spiky sides facing inwards - hence the guddick. In this recording first Laurie then I play with the carders while we chat. You can hear my ridiculous attempt to repeat the guddick in my Croydon accent which doesn't really suit it at all, and then Laurie tells me another guddick about peat.
