Recordist's notes
On the first day of the year in the first grey light hundreds of rooks flock from their roosting place and pour over the town before dispersing into the surrounding fields. It is an amazing sound and spectacularly marks the dawn of the day in the winter whatever the weather. Today is very windy. It has been so all week in this unusually stormy season. Robins are singing well before any suspicion of light. And it's the first blackbird of the season, appropriately on the first day of 2024.
