Recordist's notes

This the sound of Chris Webber demonstrating how a sheep is sheared. The sheep in question is a North Country Mule crossed with a Suffolk ram. The flock on this farm is full of wonderful sturdy little meat sheep, with incredible mothers, who produce many lambs and a lovely thick, strong woolly fleece. Chris said the Wool Marketing Board currently pay £5 per fleece which is very encouraging to hear. The demonstration was so interesting and inspiring - to me the skill involved in shearing a sheep is no ordinary task and I never tire of watching the process. Keeping the sheep docile and turning it around, all the while working over it with the buzzing clippers (that you can hear in this recording) and somehow managing to not cut the skin, look to me like a real feat. This is how all the wool in our jumpers is obtained - through this action - and it's beautiful to see it being well done. You can hear all the other people in the barn while the demo was on, the PA of course amplifying Chris's explanation of the process, the sheep on the oily board, and sometimes the chicks who are also in the barn. Recorded with a pair of Naiant X-X omni directional microphones.
