Recordist's notes

We do it every day until it seems we can do it in our sleep. Yet propelling 3,200 lbs of steel down the road at 60 mph is hardly something you'd want the people around you to be doing in their sleep. Of all the soundscapes I've made, this one is a bit of a cheat. I found that a single commute on an average day is very, very boring (and thank goodness for that). The vast majority of cars on the road today are remarkably quiet and nondescript. It is the rare dumptruck or Harley that is even distinguishable, and they're usually hurtling past you in the next lane rather than waiting patiently to be recorded. So this soundscape was assembled from several trips, with windows up and windows down, on the highways and byways, morning and evening commutes. Several hours of raw tape was edited down to just 27 minutes of "highlights." And I still didn't capture a single good crash. Major elements: * Getting into my truck (Mazda B-2200, 1989, red) * Opening the garage door * Backing out of the garage * Checking the mailbox * Driving past an industrial carpet-cleaning vacuum truck * Weaving through the surface streets * My pager goes off * Checking the traffic report (favorable) so * We jump on the freeway * Exit near work * More surface streets, and finally * Pull into the parking garage at work See also: https://anode1.bandcamp.com/album/auss11-commute
