Recordist's notes

We had been having an intense family discussion, and the mood in the house was a little oppressive. Suddenly the sense that a mighty storm was breaking outside replaced the heavy mood with one of excitement. Forgetting all about whatever we had been discussing, we ran to the door and stood in the doorway watching fork lightning driving down through the dark sky, and listening to thunder rumble overhead. It was incredibly loud and bright, and I had the sense that the whole sky was cracking. When it first began it was very explosive and loud, but my batteries were dead and the only way to create recordings was by plugging the recorder into the mains, which didn't feel like such a great option, but how could I miss the opportunity to record this amazing storm? I strapped my Naint X-X microphones onto the latch of the opened window and plugged them into the FOSTEX FR-2LE. Then I lay on the floor in the dark while everyone else slept, wondering when the storm would die down. I was listening to the amazing sounds for ages, and really hoping that the lightning would not strike our house and somehow break the recorder because I cannot afford to buy a new one. Long after I switched off the recorder I could still hear the storm, but by the time I fell asleep, it had steadied into a slow, even beat.
