Recordist's notes

I have been raising silkworms to better understand the provenance of silk textiles: this is in preparation for a Sonic Trail I am producing for TATE Modern, which will accompany an exhibit by Richard Tuttle, made of silk, viscose and modal. I have about 100 silkworms which I ordered online a fortnight ago. They love the leaves from our Mulberry tree and are growing well on a diet of them, washed and freshly picked. I have been experimenting with the best ways of recording the sounds of these silkworms; the main sounds are of their tiny claspers (feet) moving on the coarse leaves, and of their tiny jaws chowing down. You would not believe how many leaves these little comrades can eat! This recording experiment was done at midnight by switching off all the buzzy electronics in the room and lowering my sound professional binaural microphones into the silkworms' container so they hung right beside the worms. It is still very quiet and a it hissy but you can hear something of the texture of the worms.
